Movie Night Birthday Party

My good friend Marni enlisted my help for her daughter’s 5th birthday party. As the mom of two boys, it was so much fun to be involved in the planning of a GIRL party! Since her birthday is in the summer we wanted to find something fun to do outdoors, and we landed on doing an outdoor movie night. Her daughter loves movies, especially at movie theaters, so we wanted to bring that experience to their backyard.

We found the perfect invitation, Glowing Affair Photo Trifold Party Invitations, which gave us the flexibility to change colors, fonts and text so we could make it fit our theme. We changed the main text to read, “IT’S SHOWTIME!” For the photo we had a little mini photo session with the perfect prop, popcorn. Pretty sure Gwyneth had a great time, and it really helped set the stage for the party! Turns out the invitations inspired a lot of our outdoor movie party ideas, including the decorations, colors and activities.

Even before choosing the invitation we knew we wanted lanterns and lights hanging around the yard. Pinterest had LOTS of ideas for this, some not so realistic, but we threw some up here and there, and it definitely added a little element of ‘party’ to the backyard.

Yee Haw! Cowgirl Birthday Party Ideas

When discussing my niece’s birthday theme with my sister-in-law, we tossed around a few different ideas and browsed through Pear Tree’s collection for inspiration, but it wasn’t until we brought up cowgirl birthday party ideas that it took Ashlyn all of 2 seconds to say “YES!” and off we went, planning her cowgirl themed 5th birthday party!

Our Yee-haw! Western Birthday Invitations in Pink are one of my favorite cowgirl birthday party invitations. (Yes, we have more than one!) I love the typography, the colors, the wood grain pattern, everything. My sister-in-law snapped the perfect photo to use on the card, too, with Ashlyn in her pink cowgirl hat.

I have to give my sister-in-law lots (maybe all?) of credit on the decor! Guests knew they were at the right party with a pink cowgirl hat hanging on the front door to welcome everyone. Who needs balloons?

Bright ideas for a Bridal Shower

This bridal shower for my cousin was one of the simplest, but most colorful parties I’ve ever planned. The theme was decided by our choice of invitations, Pear Tree’s Multi Stripes Bridal Shower Invitations. The fun and bright colors, especially on the back, were so fun to play with, and they became the inspiration for most of our bridal shower ideas. The bride’s favorite colors were lavender and dark purple, so we used those as our primary colors and brought in many other colors from the invitation as accents.

Our original goal was to host this party outside, but weather prevented us from doing so. Still, our garden party in the living room turned out great! (Always good to have a backup plan!)

The plan for the décor was simple: use bright colors everywhere! We utilized lanterns, tissue-paper poms, fresh flowers and vases in many, many colors! We also scattered Pear Tree’s coordinating Multi Stripes Bridal Shower Decorations onto the guest tables and used it to create hanging garland behind our dessert table.

Our dessert table became another bright focal point for the décor. We served cookie dough cake pops and cake, both of which were divine. To dress the table up, we used more Multi Stripes Table Décor right on the table, as well as sewn into a garland hanging behind the table, and we added even more color with some brightly painted bud vases. To dress up our cake we attached purple flowers to the tops of skewers and paper straws—so simple and easy but so adorable! Don’t worry, we did serve food other than dessert. :)

Rustic + Elegant Bridal Shower Ideas

When it came time to planning bridal shower ideas for my future sister-in-law, Katie, it seemed natural to incorporate her wedding theme into the shower. And so, the planning for a ‘rustic elegance’ bridal shower was born.

For the invite, I chose Pear Tree’s Showers Ahead Bridal Shower Invitations. I loved everything about it, and it was an added bonus that it was a ‘You-Pick-Color’ invite that allowed me to incorporate the wedding colors of coral and gray into the invitation. I dressed up the invite by mailing it in a gray envelope which gave it a little ‘pop’ in the mail. The tri-colored return address label also doubled as a seal for the envelope.

When it came to décor, I determined that having one main focal point would maximize the visual impact. I pushed my dining room table up against one wall, which allowed me to create a backdrop out of burlap, purchased by the yard from Hobby Lobby. (Tip, most fabric stores have coupons that allow you to save up to 50% off of one single piece of fabric.) I purchased one larger piece of burlap and cut into two sheets to create the effect I was going for. To get the burlap to hang like I wanted, I hot glued a hem at the top of the two panels of burlap. I then strung them up with jute and secured them to the wall using 3M strips.

Construction Party Ideas: The Ultimate Boy Party

When I first started thinking about my oldest son’s first ‘friend’ birthday party, I knew the best place to have it was at my husband’s shop. He owns an excavation company, so with lots of big equipment and lots of little boys, I didn’t think I could go wrong.

Since construction equipment plays such a big part of our life, both of my boys know the names of every piece of equipment they see and will correct you if you ever call a front-end loader by the wrong name. I had already thrown two construction themed birthday parties for my oldest son. Both his first and second birthday parties were construction themes, and the only reason 3rd and 4th weren’t was my choice, not his. But inviting his friends put a new spin on it, and forced me to expand my construction party ideas to big-kid activities. (I did get to use many of the same supplies and props, which worked out great!)

I had already used Pear Tree’s construction party invitations before, so for this party, I repurposed our Future On The Line Graduation Invitation, and for the photos, I went down to my husband’s shop and photographed some of the equipment. I figured the boys receiving the invitation would enjoy that more than just photos of my son.

Kids Birthday Party Ideas: Searching for Superheroes!

This year’s joint birthday party theme for my boys was a pretty easy decision. As much as I hoped we’d never get into superheroes…we are into it. Big time. Witness the cuteness that is below, my two favorite superheroes of all time.

How could you say no to these two? I couldn’t. As kids birthday party ideas go, the superhero party theme is easy to pull off, but I wanted to put my own creative spin on it and not have it be too commercial, with cartoon characters everywhere. But throwing a little modern touch here, a vintage touch there, I was happy with how it all came together!

As always, my inspiration came from the invitation. Pear Tree’s Searching for Superheroes kids birthday invitations were perfect in many ways. I loved the cityscape and was able to bring that into a few decor details. Although the card is You Pick Color and can be changed in so many ways, I stuck with the original color scheme.

Next came the decor. I wanted some statement pieces that really set the tone and theme of the party. First up, the cake. I suppose that’s not really a true ‘decor’ item, but in this case, I would say it is. I’m so lucky that one of my coworkers is an amazing cake decorator. Is this cake not awesome? Yes, it tasted as good as it looked!

Season Opener: Baseball Party Ideas

When it came time to plan my son Miles’ 2nd birthday, it didn’t take long to come up with a theme. At the tender age of 2, the boy is OBSESSED with anything related to sports. To narrow down the infinite list of possible sports themes, I chose the one that we’re most familiar with: baseball. My husband played baseball growing up, throughout college and still plays today, so I had plenty of baseball party ideas to get me started. Plus, with baseball season just starting, it was perfect timing!

For the invite, I chose Pear Tree’s Baseball All Star Kids Birthday Invitations. I loved that they were simple, featured a picture of Miles and were a unique shape that would stand out in the mail. The coordinating address labels carried the theme through to the envelope and were just as adorable. Additional Tip: On the invitation ask guests to wear their favorite baseball jersey to the party for added fun. My guests knew my love for ‘theme-ing’ and did it without being told. It was awesome!

For the decor, I used red and aqua to create the overall look I was going for. For the table, I purchased a red tablecloth at the local Dollar Store and used a table runner I already had to dress it up. For the centerpiece, I took a simple clear vase and filled it with baseballs, both of which I had lying around the house. I opted for new baseballs for the centerpiece but you could definitely utilize used baseballs to give the party a more vintage feel.

This is an important celebration not only for your grad, but for you as a parent. It’s been a journey for both of you, and that’s absolutely worth celebrating! We’ve chosen a sports theme, but the same design elements can work for any theme.

For many graduates, sports are a very important part of their journey through high school, so it’s a natural idea for a graduation party. We have the perfect All Star Graduation Invitations to honor the athletes in your life. They even allow for a few stats highlighting their (or their team’s) athletic achievements.
Graduation Invitations -- All Star
Every graduation party revolves around the food—what great party doesn’t? Considering there might be a lot of hungry athletes in attendance, in addition to other friends and family, you’ll want something easy. Walking tacos are both easy and a favorite with teens. A kitchen or bar area in a basement works well for your serving area, because the sink can double as a beverage center and sets a little more casual tone for the party.

Bicycle Theme Baby Shower Ideas

Erin is one of my close friends from college. She and Dave make the most perfect couple I think I’ve ever seen, so I was beyond excited to find out they were expecting. They’re going to make such great parents. They love to bike, so when we released our Double Bicycle and Baby Make Three Baby Shower Invitations I knew immediately it was the absolutely perfect theme for Erin’s baby shower ideas.
Modern Baby Shower Invitations -- Double Bicycle and Baby Make Three
At Erin’s request, we hosted the shower at her house. A few of the hosts took her to the gym while the rest of us stayed back to decorate and set up. We used the colors from the invitation as our guide for the décor, knowing we wanted something festive for the door and lots of color inside. We saw a tutorial on how to make tissue paper tassel garland at TomKatStudio.com and loved the idea. We made a short one for the door and a longer one to hang inside on the archway.

Superhero Photo Birthday Invitations -- Calling All Superheroes!
A note from Christy:

I am pretty lucky to have some really great friends, and even luckier that many of them like to go wild planning their kids’ birthday parties. Below is a post from my friend from college, Sarah, who threw her son a pretty awesome Superhero Birthday Party. Good timing, as my boys are set on a Batman/Superhero party next, her party gives me lots of ideas! Enjoy Sarah’s post!

Conley’s Superhero Birthday Party
I will confess that Conley’s 2nd birthday party was very small…in fact, it might be a stretch to call it a party since it was just Conley, mom, and dad. Since I went small last year, I knew that I wanted to do something fun and special for his 3rd birthday. His current obsession right now is Spiderman, so we decided to celebrate with a Superhero Themed 3rd Birthday Party!

Since I already knew that Pear Tree had a Superhero themed invite, Calling All Superheroes! – Kids Birthday Invitations, that would be perfect, I didn’t need to look far for invites. Naturally, Conley had dressed up as Spiderman for Halloween, so a picture of him in his costume paired with this invite was the perfect inspiration to get me started on superhero birthday party ideas. Pear Tree had matching Calling All Superheroes! – Address Labels, so the invite process was set!
