Featured Favorite: First Birthday Ideas

Real cards (and parties!) created by real people like you!

This month’s Featured Favorite is sharing fun first birthday ideas with you! Mom, Ashley, wanted to throw her one-year-old, Kalla, a unicorn-themed birthday party. Ashley personalized our Magic Unicorn Mask Kids Birthday Invitation and told us, “When I saw the magical unicorn birthday invites on Pear Tree’s website, I knew I had found the theme for my daughter’s 1st birthday party. I absolutely loved the whimsical idea of unicorns and bright colors.”

Girls’ Birthday Party Ideas: Monster Theme!

This little birthday girl, Whitley, is such a sweetie and can make your heart melt with just one look into those big blue eyes. Her parents joke that she can also be a little stinker, getting into mischief and keeping them constantly on their toes. So, for Whitley’s 1st birthday party, her mom, Andrea, knew just which theme to go with – little monsters!

Andrea picked out the My Little Monsters in Purple Kids Birthday Invitations and used pink and purple as the theme for her little girl’s birthday party ideas.

To celebrate springtime in Minnesota, this first birthday party was held outdoors. The front door was decorated as a one-eyed monster and there were various tables set up for gifts, food, and areas for guests to sit. Andrea had ordered Monster Bash Kids Party Decorations and personalized them with pink to match the invitation. Big sister, Mylah (4), was in charge of sticking the party decor to the garage doors while Andrea stuck them to the tables.

Top 5 Kids Birthday Cake Ideas

At Pear Tree I’m known as the team “cake lady,” and working here while running a baking business in my free time certainly has its advantages. I hear what the birthday party themes are before anyone else, I can look at pictures of cakes for hours, and I even get to write blog posts about cakes! Cakes (and cupcakes) are my thing. (The team has a love/hate relationship with me, though, because I bring in extra cupcakes all the time.) I decided that a blog post on kids birthday cake ideas would give me an excuse to bake, and help you with inspiration for your child’s upcoming birthday party!

1. Monster Theme
In case you haven’t noticed, monster parties are all the rage right now! Personally, these are probably my favorite cakes to make. It really doesn’t get much cuter than this. They are easier to make than you think. Just use Tip #234 to cover the cake, making the “fur” longer or shorter, depending on the type of monster you want to create. Choose from our monster kids birthday invitations to match the cake.

2. Barbie and Princess Theme
Barbie cakes have forever been a hit with little girls. I remember having them for my own birthday parties. Bake the cake in an oven-proof bowl and place it upside down on plate to frost. Cut a hole to set the Barbie in, so that the cake forms the skirt of her dress. For the princess castle cake use ice cream cones to create the towers and candy to decorate! We have an assortment of princess kids birthday invitations for whichever cake you choose.

Construction Party Ideas: The Ultimate Boy Party

When I first started thinking about my oldest son’s first ‘friend’ birthday party, I knew the best place to have it was at my husband’s shop. He owns an excavation company, so with lots of big equipment and lots of little boys, I didn’t think I could go wrong.

Since construction equipment plays such a big part of our life, both of my boys know the names of every piece of equipment they see and will correct you if you ever call a front-end loader by the wrong name. I had already thrown two construction themed birthday parties for my oldest son. Both his first and second birthday parties were construction themes, and the only reason 3rd and 4th weren’t was my choice, not his. But inviting his friends put a new spin on it, and forced me to expand my construction party ideas to big-kid activities. (I did get to use many of the same supplies and props, which worked out great!)

I had already used Pear Tree’s construction party invitations before, so for this party, I repurposed our Future On The Line Graduation Invitation, and for the photos, I went down to my husband’s shop and photographed some of the equipment. I figured the boys receiving the invitation would enjoy that more than just photos of my son.

12 months, 365 days + 8760 hours!

I’m so glad I took photos of our son Alex every month of his first year! It was fun to see him grow. It’s amazing how much they change in a year. When I was on maternity leave I cut out all of the numbers making it a little easier to sew the onsies each month. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with these photos but knew I wanted them to stay consistent. Sophie, the giraffe always took a part in the photo, which was given to me at my baby shower!

When it came time to order 1st birthday invitations I thought it would be fun to use the photos in some way. I love the layout of our booklets and thought it would be a great keepsake for his first birthday party! Since I am one of the designers at Pear Tree Greetings, I had the opportunity to design the perfect invitation for my little man, as well as something I know our customers would love.

Rainbow Birthday Party Ideas

The colorful ribbon winding its way down our Ring Around the Ribbon modern kids birthday invitations set the stage for one very colorful rainbow birthday party at celebrations.com. All the birthday party ideas tied into the rainbow color scheme, right down to the rainbow ice cream cake and assortment of colored fruit drinks.

A homemade birthday banner hung across the yard with colored flags cut to match the ribbons on the invitation. Even the snacks were part of the décor, with serve-yourself veggies, fresh fruit, and salty snacks lined up in a rainbow of color on the serving table. Each snack tray was topped by a color-coordinated bath toy, like the little gold fish swimming in the baby carrots. Colorful stuffed toys also made perfect centerpieces for the tables (and gifts for the guest of honor, later).
