7 reasons to keep sending Christmas cards when your kids are all grown up

I’ll admit, sending Christmas cards does get harder as your kids get older. I can think of lots of excuses not to, from lack of photos to lack of funds. But I also think that sending Christmas cards is about more than sharing baby photos.

1. By sending Christmas cards every year you are teaching your kids the power of connection and showing them that you value meaningful holidays as well as old friendships. You may not think they are watching, but they are. Someday they will think of you when they send their own Christmas cards.

Holiday Checklist: What You Can Be Doing Now

Have you started planning for the holidays? You’ve made travel arrangements, decided who’s hosting Thanksgiving dinner and your Holiday photo cards are ready to mail? Well, consider yourself a superhero because most of us don’t even want to think about the holidays yet. But if you get started on your holiday checklist now, you can eliminate some of the last-minute craziness and stress of the holiday season.

Holiday Planning Checklist
Talk to your relatives.
This may seem obvious, but rather than assuming plans will be the same as last year and that Aunt Susie will be hosting Thanksgiving as usual, you should ask the question and make plans accordingly. And if you are hosting (or can’t this year) let people know now, so they can make plans.

Keep your eyes peeled for deals. Whether you’re setting the Thanksgiving table, trimming the tree or decking the halls, decorating for the holidays takes time, money and planning, especially if you’re young and just starting out. You can be collecting ideas all year long, and keeping a lookout for sale items you can turn into something beautiful.

Staff Picks: Our Favorite Christmas Cards

To help you choose a card from our amazing collection of photo Christmas card ideas, we asked our team to pick their favorites and tell you why. Let us know whose idea you like best!

Christy, The Photographer
Photo Christmas Cards -- Colorful Kaleidoscope Photo Book
The INSTANT I saw this card, I fell in love. The colors, the shapes, the sparkle & gold. Loved.It.All. Geometric shapes are very popular right now and the element of gold sealed the deal. It also has 24 photos, which could be a little intimidating, but with a hobby of photography and an addiction to getting my boys’ photos taken, I am not short on photos. Yes, you heard right, I have boys, and I am choosing a card full of purples, pinks and gold. They’ll get over it.

David, The Wise Dad
Photo Christmas Cards -- Foil Photo Spinner In Red
My favorite Christmas card this year is the Foil Photo Spinner. It’s truly unique. How many cards are you going to get that are interactive? The out-of-the-envelope wow factor is very high. Pretty sure it’ll knock the proverbial socks off my friends and family. I don’t have my photos for the card yet, but because this card keeps the photos separate, I don’t have to worry about making them look good next to each other. I have the flexibility to use whatever photos I like.

Megan, The New Homeowner
Photo Christmas Cards -- Tri Photo Stand-Up Frame
I like the picture frame cards because they’re clever. I haven’t seen the idea anywhere else. I love the idea that my card could survive the recycling bin come January. (It would certainly stick around all year at my house!) And there’s the feeling of engaging with the people you’re sending it to. I imagine them folding the kickstand into place, turning the card back around and feeling a little spark of delight as they place it on their mantle.

Step 1. Clothing options.
If you are going to get professional photos taken, you’ll want to start thinking about what to wear for your family photo. Do you want the family to be wearing light colors, or are brights more your style? Will you need to take a colorful background into consideration, or will your clothing add color to the photo? Step 2. Book your photographer and talk to them about your style.
Once you know you want professional photos taken and have started thinking about your clothing options, start scouting out local photographers. You’ll want to look at their website and see if the photos they have taken match your style. Once you have chosen a photographer, set up a session and send them your favorite family photo ideas. Are you going to use props? Is it going to be on a beach, or in the woods, or maybe you want to do it in the snow? Local photographers can offer suggestions for locations in the area.

More Christmas Card Photo Ideas

We’ve chosen some of our favorite new Christmas cards to illustrate how clothing choices and the use of photo filters in your Christmas card photos can dramatically change the way your cards look. (Of course, starting with one of our awesome Christmas card designs doesn’t hurt!)

If you already have your card picked out, be sure to show it to your photographer because, aside from letting him or her know the style of photo you like, it can inspire location, posing, propping or lighting ideas. Knowing whether you may want to try black and white or a photo filter is important, too. Here are some Christmas card photo ideas from our new collection we wanted to share.

Make your colors count

Twinkle Lights Photo Book -- Christmas Cards
The red sweater, green pants and scarf on the little boy in our Merry Merry Picture Frame Christmas Cards absolutely make the photo, especially with the white snow, dog, and relatively colorless background to make the colors really pop. Similarly, the bright colors of the shirts on the kids in our Twinkle Lights Photo Book Christmas Cards match the card’s bright color palette. If you want a bright card, wearing bright clothes is one way to achieve that!

Let your card wear the colors

Another way to emphasize bright colors is use black and white photos, and frame them in a colorful card to let the holiday message stand out. To make sure your photo looks great in black and white, wear darker colors than your skin tone so faces are highlighted. And if you are starting with a color photo and adding a black and white filter, try adding the contrast & sharpen filters or the vibrance filter to intensify the lights and darks in the photo. Four examples shown, clockwise from top left: Joy Full, Sparkly Wishes, Vintage Treescape Circle and Tall Tale Christmas Cards.
