  1. Write it right away. Preferably while the event is fresh in your mind. Nothing is harder than trying to remember details of a conversation, dinner party or event, weeks after it happened. If you write the thank you note quickly, it’ll be easier to come up with specific things to mention, perhaps a funny moment or a thoughtful touch you appreciated. Wedding thank you cards you can take a little longer, but most etiquette books suggest sending them within 2-3 months.
  2. Specific is better. Anybody can write a generic thank you note, and we’ve all gotten them: “Thanks for the blankety blank. I really appreciate it. Thanks again. Love, Julie.” Much better to mention exactly what you’re thanking this person for, and add something specific about why you liked it.  Continue reading

A customer service story with a notable ending

thank you noteA few weeks ago, I had to bring my car into the shop to get it checked out. Since I had recently moved to town, I asked friends for recommendations and wound up bringing it to a small, locally-owned place in town.

From the beginning, I was pleased with their service. I was able to drop it off in the morning, and one of the employees was kind enough to meet me there before opening and give me a ride to work. Later that day they called to tell me they had found a serious safety issue with the car, completely unrelated to the problems I’d been having. Despite a heavy workload, they were able to get the parts and have them installed the very next day.

When I picked up the car, I found a small package of jelly beans with a handwritten note that said, “Thank you for supporting our locally-owned business.” I had a great feeling about them and knew I’d be going back to them when necessary. Well, that turned out to be sooner than expected. Continue reading

Organizing ideas that control the paper clutter

Organizing ideas that control the paper clutter
I am getting the itch to do some spring cleaning. I don’t mean washing windows, vacuuming curtains or polishing silver. I mean digging out from under the landslide of paper that has built up over the winter, so that I can see my kitchen counter again.

Paper piles are everywhere. While it may look disorganized, it is anything but. Each pile holds something specific: bills; coupons; kids’ school work; recipes I intend to try someday; holiday photo cards sitting around since Christmas; craft and school paper for the kids; stationery, greeting cards and mismatched envelopes. There’s a place for all of it. Unfortunately, that place is usually my kitchen. Continue reading
